Deepinder Goyal offered a job to Bengaluru man: Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal shares all new feature updates on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. So when he announced a new feature called ‘Food Rescue’ on November 10, 2024, we knew we had to check it out. This feature aims to reduce food wastage by redirecting cancelled orders on Zomato to other customers.
Goyal explained on X (formerly Twitter) that despite having strict cancellation policies, over 4 lakh orders are cancelled on Zomato every month for various reasons. To combat food waste he said Zomato has launched the “Food Rescue” feature. This new option allows nearby customers to claim cancelled orders at discounted prices.

“Canceled orders will now pop up for nearby customers, who can grab them at an unbeatable price, in their original untampered packaging, and receive them in just minutes," Goyal wrote on X.
He shared more details in his next tweet that cancelled orders will be available to customers within 3 km of the delivery partner at discounted prices. Customers will have limited time to claim the order to ensure freshness.
“Zomato will not keep any proceeds (except the required government taxes). The amount paid by the new customer will be shared with the original customer (if they made payment online), and with the restaurant partner," Goyal further mentioned.

Orders that are not eligible for this feature are temperature sensitive items like ice creams, shakes or smoothies. He also said delivery partners will be fully compensated for their efforts from pickup to drop off.
“Food Rescue will show up on your home page automatically if there’s a cancelled order available for you to grab. Refresh the home page to check for any newly available orders that need to be rescued," he concluded.
“Chances of 2 idiots sharing meals ordering and cancelling at the same time getting a discount place," read Bhanu’s third suggestion. Lastly, he recommended limiting cancellations to two per month.
Goyal, impressed by Bhanu’s ideas, responded with, “All this and more already in place. Good thinking, btw. Who are you and what do you do? Would love to know you more, and see if we can work together. ???? DM me please if you wanna chat more."

While many X users liked the feature and some gave suggestions, one X user’s comment impressed the Zomato CEO. X user Bhanu had some points to prevent misuse of this feature:
- Not to be applicable to COD
- Not to allow cancellation if delivery reaches 500 m to the delivery point
- Two idiots ordering and cancelling at the same time and getting a discount place
- Less than 2 cancellations per month.
- He liked the suggestions and said “let’s work together”
