IMD Issues Red Alert Over Severe Heatwave In These States: Meteorological authorities predict scorching heat to persist over East and South Peninsular India for the next five days.
For the next five days, severe heatwave conditions are expected over coastal Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, as well as interior Karnataka.
There is a very high likelihood of heat illnesses and heat stroke for all age groups in Gangetic West Bengal, according to the weather forecasting agency.
Authorities emphasized the need for appropriate preventive measures, especially for vulnerable individuals, according to the IMD.
A dry westerly wind and strong solar insolation caused severe weather conditions in the southern and western districts of West Bengal, forcing the state government to reschedule summer holidays in schools it runs or helps, while private educational institutions switched to online classes or changed hours.
Over south Bengal, the MeT department forecasts a gradual increase in the maximum temperature by two to four degrees Celsius over the next three days.
A severe heatwave is expected to prevail in south Bengal. The MeT department advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat and outdoor work between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Odisha, Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema were also issued orange alerts, highlighting the increased risk of heat illness symptoms among those exposed to prolonged sunlight.
Infants and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, so precautions must be taken.
From April 26 to April 28, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecast over Northwest India, providing relief to some regions.
