The first day of the sun's transition into the Makara (Capricorn) sign, which signifies the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer days, is Makar Sankranti, which is observed on January 14 every year.
Different regions have different names for it, including Maghi in Punjab, Bihu in Assam, and Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
The event, known as Uttarayan in Gujarat, is most famously observed by kite flying. People congregate on roofs throughout the state as part of the International Kite Flying Festival, where they enjoy the clean skies and friendly competition.

People enjoy traditional foods like Undhiyu, a dish consisting of winter vegetables, and Chikki, which is formed from peanuts and sesame seeds, in addition to flying kites.
Furthermore, Makar Sankranti is a time to share foods like coconut laddoos, sesame sweets, and khichdi, which all represent the joyous occasion and the fostering of friendships.
The festival's deeper meaning is that winter is over and that warmer days and fresh starts are ahead.
