About 'Ugly Christmas sweater' contest: Ugly Christmas sweater contests have become a beloved tradition of the holiday season through the decades. They trace their roots back to the flourishing 1950s when knitwear started being mass-produced with holiday themes. By the 1980s, these sweaters were getting more eccentric, featuring bright colors, disproportionate sizes, and odd designs.
