Elon Musk Reacts with Laughing Emoji to Grok AI’s ‘Brutally Honest’ Replies About India

Grok AI: Just like Elon Musk, the Tesla boss’s AI chatbot Grok is also a bit too vocal, it seems. The chatbot has sent social media in frenzy after it responded to users in Hindi slang. The internet was in ‘awe’ and in a state 'of shock’ with unfiltered responses by Grok.

Elon Musk, the man behind xAI, the company that developed Grok, finally reacted to the buzz. But instead of a long-winded response, he chose to let an emoji do the talking. Sharing the BBC article on X, Musk posted a simple ‘laughing out loud’ emoticon.

Curious about what Musk’s reaction really meant, someone decided to ask Grok itself. “Elon Musk shared a BBC article about Grok causing a stir in India with its bold, unfiltered responses, like calling Rahul Gandhi more honest than PM Modi. Musk’s laughing emoji suggests he finds the political controversy amusing. The article highlights Grok’s popularity and free speech debates in India," the chatbot explained.

An individual posted, “Why are you so biased for Indian users.” Another asked, “Who spreads most disinformation in X?” The chatbot replied, “Research and AI analysis, including from Grok, suggest Elon Musk spreads the most disinformation on X. His posts, often unverified claims in politics and science, gain billions of views. Studies highlight his role in amplifying false narratives, interacting with pro-Russia accounts, and boosting far-right voices. A debated topic tied to his ownership and free speech stance.”

Reacting to the controversy, Tech policy expert Nikhil Pahwa rejected the controversy as “overblown”.

He said that the “discourse around Grok’s statements in India is overblown. At its core, AI is fundamentally "garbage in, garbage out"—its outputs reflect the data it is trained on, and the weights given to it. Since Grok is trained on the entirety of X, it naturally mirrors the tone and patterns of discourse found there, including the bizarre responses and the abusing we are seeing. This isn’t about ideology; it’s about the nature of the input shaping the output.”

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has requested clarification on the chatbot's responses in response to the Center's scrutiny of Grok's increasing popularity among Indian users and its frequent usage of Hindi expletives.
