The meeting also comes on the back of earlier tensions and subsequent resumption of intelligence cooperation between the United States and Ukraine.
The spokesperson did indicate, however, that it was a critical moment in attempts to cause peace between Ukraine and Russia by negotiation.
Trump, who has been insistently driving the two sides into ceasefire agreement, has said on Friday that a productive discussion took place between his envoy with the leadership of Russia. He called for a high-level meeting between Kyiv and Moscow to close the deal.

Previously, Trump had warned both sides that his administration would walk out of its efforts to achieve peace if the two sides failed to reach an agreement soon.
Therefore, this meeting in Rome marks the first face-to-face interaction of the two leaders since that of Trump and Zelenskyy in the Oval Office in February, which turned out to be a shouting match.
After that meeting, the US cut Ukrainian intelligence cooperation, which is crucial in preventing Russian attacks; this, however, was later restored.
