Delhi Metro Announces New Liquor Carrying Rules: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has emphasised that excise rules of the respective states that permission is given to travellers to carry two sealed liquor bottles in the Delhi Metro trains, saying travellers should be careful of any violation in case of cross-border transit.

In June last year, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation allowed carrying two sealed liquor bottles per person on the Metro trains, obtaining the Delhi government's objection that it was against the excise rules.

The DMRC trains operate under the National Capital Region (NCR), covering Delhi also including other cities like Faridabad, and Gurugram in Haryana and Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar told PTI, "Whatever the Delhi government has authorised us is (permitted). The excise rules of the particular state prevail."

According to a senior official from the Excise Department, the Excise Act specifies that only one sealed bottle of liquor, like rum, vodka, or whisky, is allowed to be carried from one state to another. It will be a violation of the Act if a traveller carries two sealed bottles of liquor while crossing state borders.

DMRC Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal said "We are not specifying either one or two whatever number of bottles are permitted. Since we are operating in Delhi, UP and Haryana and whatever is the excise law of the state, it will prevail."

The passengers are expected to follow the respective state excise laws concerning carrying liquor during cross-border transit, the DMRC said.

The DMRC managing director said, "If a commuter boards a train in Delhi with two liquor bottles and is headed to UP then he should understand that he has two follow the excise rule of that state. So, if only one liquor bottle is allowed, he should carry just one."

The DMRC got the notice from the Delhi government's Excise Department after they gave permission to metro travellers to carry two sealed liquor bottles in the Metro trains last year. Before that, in the Delhi Metro, trains carrying alcohol were banned except on the Airport Express Line.

Travellers are needed to stay informed about and comply with the existing state excise regulations.
