CJI BR Gavai: Indian Legal System Needs Urgent Fix, Trials Drag on for Decades
Hyderabad, the CJI conceded that the judicial system in India is facing some form of unique challenges and is in dire need of repair.

CJI BR Gavai: Chief Justice of India BR Gavai sent a strong and bold message on Saturday and asked that the judicial system in India be reformed urgently. In a speech delivered as the chief guest at the convocation ceremony at NALSAR University of Law (a law school) located outside Hyderabad, the CJI conceded that the judicial system in India is facing some form of unique challenges and is in dire need of repair.
Speaking in the presence of target audiences of the trigger legal professionals during an event held in a hall, CJI Gavai struggled against problems that are deep-rooted in the justice system. One on-going situation he cited, which has been the bane of the administration of justice, is the consistent problem of judicial delays, which has been denting the confidence of the people about the process.
Delays That Take Decades
In certain cases, he said, trial delays have taken decades which highlights the extent of inefficiency that has become common in Indian courts. It was not only his words regarding the procedural challenges, it had a human price. “We have seen cases where individuals, later found innocent, spent years behind bars as undertrial prisoners,” he added, stimulating a morbid existence that impinges upon thousands of people within the nation.
However, refusing to be too pessimistic, Justice Gavai gave an optimistic note. “Even though I conclude that our legal system is badly in need of fixing, I remain cautiously optimistic that my fellow citizens will rise to the challenges,” he said, putting a stress on the belief in common work and generation of new legal talent.

Warning students about falling under the shallow influence, Gavai suggested that they should seek mentors who are recognized rather than tall. He also told people who wish to be study abroad that they should apply scholarships so that not to burden their families financially, which is an additional evidence of importance of not only ambition, but also their responsibility.

The event was also graced by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the Supreme Court Judge Justice P.S. Narasimha lending more weight to the occasion.
