Shubhanshu Shukla Takes Gajar Ka Halwa to Space | How Astronauts Eat in Orbit
As one of the most unforgettable evenings of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), the special treat, which ISRO and DRDO have created specially to take to space was a mark of a small party aboard the station.

Noting that cooking is a big part of the astronaut experience, Shukla transported a preview of delicious home cooking to the International Space Station, both delighting and informing his colleagues in an illustration of food and culture that transcends the divide, as he and his colleagues had a Gajar ka halwa party.
The space-made special treat by the ISRO and DRDO was in a small party that was organized in the station and the evening was one of the unforgettable evenings of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4).
A celebratory menu consisting of rehydrated shrimp cocktails and crackers, a savoury chicken fajita, and, as a dessert, a cake made of sweet bread and condensed milk and walnuts in respect of the multinational make up of the crew was served.
The Gajar ka halwa, a traditional Indian dish based on carrots, made by Shukla came out as a highlight, reflecting not only new advances in space food technology, but also the feeling of home at a distance of the planet Earth.
Astronaut Jonny Kim reflected on the evening, saying, “One of the most unforgettable evenings I’ve experienced on this mission was sharing a meal with new friends, Ax-4, aboard the International Space Station. We swapped stories and marveled at how people from diverse backgrounds and nations came together to represent humanity in space.”
These functions are not mere change of routine, but they create sweet ways of togetherness and the bonding of togetherness, through food.
The highlight of the Indian cuisine, especially adjusted to be cooked in microgravity conditions, proves the increased influence of international cooperation in the organization of space missions and the necessity to offer astronauts at least a few things they could recognize in space.
Even staying in a place, where space travel is ahead, these kinds of moments remind that people are on the contrary to the distance in space and that simple pleasure of a dessert can be a uniting force between different cultures, memories being made a hundred kilometers above the ground.
Ax-4 crew is now on their last leg before they dock into the ISS on Monday.
