Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup Boycott of India Could Backfire Badly, Warn Experts

Bangladesh will no longer participate in the T20 world cup 2026 held in India and Sri Lanka starting February 7, which is an easy defeat of the sport of cricket. The series of back and forth exchanges between the ICC and the Bangladesh Cricket Board had reached their end and none of the two parties was ready to give in. The ICC gave the BCB a final chance to get things straight on Monday- talk to your government or walk out of the country but the sports ministry instead appealed to and persuaded its players against going to India on the pretext of security issues. And fence, regrettably, Bangladesh were kicked out of the tournament, Scotland taking their place in the 20-over ICC tournament.

The move by Bangladesh to shut all the doors to hosting the T20 World Cup in India can not only ruin its relations with Indian cricket but also damage its advancement in the world stage. Bangladesh has sabotaged its position and compromised its cause, whether in the prospect of expulsion by the IPL, loss of money or whether in flaring fires and feeling of being abandoned. Here’s how.

IPL boycott looms large

Should the ICC ensure that Bangladesh is not included in the T20 world cup then the chances of their players being included in the Indian premier league has reduced to nearly zero. Similar to the cases of Pakistan cricketers who are still prohibited to play in the IPL, the same will now be applied to the Bangladesh players too. Such faces as Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Litton Das and Mustafizur Rahman have been frequent participants of the tournament over the last 18 years. The said door is however seen to be cemented closed, and the relationship between the BCB and BCCI has never been worse.

Huge financial loss

None Bangladesh would translate to no financial gains. The board will lose an annual ICC revenue of $20-25 million, and a participation fee of approximately half a million dollars, should battle lines be solidly drawn at the ICC meeting yesterday. The ICC and the BCB instantly went against each other as the members of the board passed the vote against Bangladesh in a swifter manner.

As recent as last week, Bangladesh star Mehidy Hasan Miraz had emphasized the complete reliance of the earnings of players on ICC events, saying that the BCB contributes little or nothing to the revenues of players. Given that the boycott is now in progress, the economic survival of Bangladesh cricketers is bound to receive a major blow.

Bangladesh cricket to revert at least by 10 years

In the year 2000, Bangladesh became a Test Nation, which is ironic because it was against India. Although their cricketing developmental progress might not have been as high as that of a country such as Afghanistan during the last 25 years, Bangladesh have always been in a position to frustrate the stronger team through their unpredictability.

Quitting the World Cup, even, would create much more destructive effects. The threat of a loss of full-member status is actual and the backlash would be a strain on bilateral relations and would interfere with the future cycle of FTP. Most of all, it is possible to sympathize with the cricketing fans of Bangladesh in a country where the sport is a passion bordering obsession over decades.

Hosting the future tournaments of the ICC implies risk

With the present FTP, Bangladesh have received the hosting of the 2031 ODI World Cup. The BCCI, however, is not likely to take its team to Bangladesh unless something out of the ordinary is done. In the past, India has not been going to touring nations where the safety of the players might be questionable.

With a number of Hindu men being murdered, which casts serious security concerns, conducting a tournament of the magnitude of the world cup would be nearly a sure way of getting objections. And as soon as doubts of safety start to creep in, it is not only India that would follow suit but the confidence of the rest of the cricketing world would also trail behind.
