Telugu star Chiranjeevi got the prestigious Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) National Award in Hyderabad today. He was felicitated by Amitabh Bachchan. Akkineni International Foundation started the award in 2005 to honor artists for their outstanding work in Indian cinema.
This year the event was to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Telugu cinema legend and Nagarjuna’s father, Akkineni Nageswara Rao. A video from the event showed Amitabh Bachchan presenting a trophy and shawl to Chiranjeevi. To take Big B’s blessings, a very emotional Chiranjeevi bent before him and touched his feet. After the award, Chiranjeevi posed for a photo with Nagarjuna Akkineni and Amitabh Bachchan.
He was the icing on the cake of an already wonderful event. It was not just formal. Considering his growing relationship with Telugu cinema, he called himself an “honorary member” of the industry, along with Chiranjeevi and Nag Ashwin who have worked with him in their films. This is the first time I have heard of a Czech who is aware of double meanings in Telugu cinema! The response was expected; the hall was clapping throughout.

Amitabh Bachchan recently appeared in Kalki 2898 AD with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone and thanked the film for breaking a record by collecting over 1000 crores worldwide. When asked about his rapport with Nag Ashwin (Kalki’s director) he also made a funny comment that he should be on the director’s speed dial for more films. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new party between Bollywood and Telugu cinema industry.
Nagarjuna Akkineni, the host of the evening, spoke warm words about Bachchan. After watching Kalki 2898 AD, Nagarjuna had called Amit Bachchan and said, “Amit Ji, my original mass hero is back!” To hear such a comment would not only be about Mr. Bachchan’s performance but also the golden era of Indian cinema which he represents in many ways.
This year’s ANR Awards was not just about cinema but also about the bonds that transcend borders and connect the icons and the narrators across the industry.
