How AI Technology Aided the Army: Three terrorists were neutralized in J&K’s Akhnoor sector on Monday after they attacked an ambulance in an Army convoy. On Tuesday, the Army said the operation was a success due to unmanned vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI).

“We used unmanned vehicles and AI and it was quick and successful,” said Major General Sameer Shrivastava, GoC 10 Infantry Division, during a briefing. He also mentioned the sacrifice of the Army’s sniffer dog Phantom who was killed in action while protecting troops. “Phantom’s sacrifice saved many lives,” he added.

Phantom, a 4 year old sniffer dog, was fatally injured in the counter-terror operation. Officials hailed his bravery and his role in the operation.

Army jawans kept watch at the encounter site for two days after the initial attack on the ambulance. The joint search operation involved Jammu and Kashmir police and Indian security forces and the area was sealed off quickly.

The quick response from the security forces and intelligence from local villagers prevented the terrorists from achieving their objective.

The operation was part of Operation Asan, the counter-offensive launched by the security forces after the terrorists attacked the Army convoy in Battal. The terrorists attacked the ambulance and the security forces retaliated quickly.

Advanced technology like unmanned vehicles and AI was used in the operation and it proved the Indian Army’s evolving doctrine in counter-terrorism. “The terrorists were heavily armed, indicating a major plan. Our preparation and coordination with intelligence agencies were crucial in thwarting their plans,” Major General Shrivastava noted.

“We conducted a very successful operation where we neutralized three terrorists. I am thankful to all the security forces,” said Major General Srivastava at a press briefing. “We acted swiftly based on local information regarding suspicious movement. Given their heavy arms and posted threats, we believe they were here for a significant mission.”

Sadly the operation cost the life of Phantom, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois Army dog. Born in May 2020, Phantom had been in the region since August 2022 and had been part of multiple high risk missions. He was killed in action while protecting the troops during a counter ambush. “We lost our Army dog, Phantom, during the search operation. His sacrifice saved many lives,” acknowledged Major General Srivastava.

The operation showed the synergy between the Army and civil administration, DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua range Shiv Kumar Sharma said. “Our coordination with the Army ensures rapid response to any terrorist presence, and this synergy grows stronger each day,” Sharma stated.
