Nitish Kumar Promises Free Electricity for Bihar: In a big pre-Bihar Assembly polls announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said that all domestic consumers in the state will get free electricity up to 125 units per month from August 1, 2025 (effective from July billing cycle).
Taking to his official 'X' account, Nitish Kumar said, “We have been providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates from the very beginning. Now, we have decided that from August 1, 2025, all domestic consumers in the state will not have to pay any charges for electricity consumption up to 125 units.
He further said, “We have also decided that in the next three years, with the consent of all these domestic consumers, solar power plants will be installed on their rooftops or at nearby public places to provide benefits. Under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, for extremely poor families, the State government will bear the entire cost of installing solar power plants, and for the rest, the government will provide appropriate support.”
He also announced that over the next three years, solar power plants will be installed on household rooftops or in nearby public spaces.
For poor families, the entire cost of the solar power system will be borne by the government under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the Bihar Chief Minister said.

JD(U) MLC and chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar welcomed the announcement saying, “Nitish’s decision to give free electricity is historic and welcome.
We purchase electricity at highest rates but still give subsidy to consumers. Dalits, minorities and those struggling with daily challenges will benefit the most. This will be another milestone in Bihar’s social transformation under Nitish’s leadership.”
Taking a dig at the opposition, he added, “The RJD, which wanted to light lanterns in people’s homes, has now suffered a political shock of 33,000 volts.”
Nitish Kumar’s latest announcement comes close on the heels of his earlier promise to give one crore government jobs and boost employment opportunities for the youth over the next five years.
