World Humanitarian Day History
Humanitarian Day is not just a day to remember the 19th August humanitarian day martyrs but also to recognize their efforts made towards us to make our lives easier and safer.
The day was founded by the United Nations General Assembly to remember the deceased 22 U.N. aid workers on 19th August, who were bombed in Baghdad, U.N. headquarters in 2003. Sérgio Vieira de Mello the Former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was also one of the deceased people.
After this incident, the Sérgio Vieira Mello Foundation and de Mello’s family worked together with the Ambassadors of France, Switzerland, Japan, and Brazil at both the Geneva and New York tables to appoint a dedicate a special day for the remembrance and legacy of the fallen Humanitarian workers.
Every year hundreds of humanitarian workers get killed and the U.N. comes up with a new theme for the event to focus on the specific subject that needs the spotlight.
