Wiaan Mulder Declares on 400, Misses Chance to Break Brian Lara’s World Record

South Africa relief captain Wiaan Mulder was on the verge of surpassing the record held by West Indies legendary player Brian Lara of all-time highest individual score in Test cricket. Nevertheless, Proteas captain ensured that the team was taken first when he terminated the innings at 626/5. Wiaan Mulder finally finished not out on 367 runs, and due to this he has now become a part of the top five in the list of highest individual scores in test cricket. In the first innings during the second Test against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club at Bulawayo on Monday, Mulder was in miraculous form.

The right handed batsman, however, decided against breaking the long-standing record (of most runs in an individual Test innings) of Brian Lara. Brian Lara had earlier scored an unbeaten 400 off 582 balls against England in the year 2004 in the St John Stadium in Antigua.

When this occurred, one believed this record would last permanently. Some of them were very close to passing the record such as Michael Clarke, David Warner, or even Mahela Jayawardene yet none came to the record.

But now, Mulder is the South African batter with the highest single score as he had surpassed the earlier one of Hashim Amla of 311 made against England in 2012.

The 27 year old also broke the second fastest triple aspect in a test after reaching the milestone of 297 balls against Zimbabwe. Virender Sehwag came to certificate the fastest triple century after accomplishing the goal in 278 balls against South Africa in Chennai.

Mulder is captaining South Africa in the second Test of the two-match series with Zimbabwe since Keshav Maharaj was standing down. Cricket South Africa (CSA) have not used players such as Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram.

Temba Bavuma, the World Test Championship (WTC)-winning skipper, was sidelined because of an injury he got during the final match played against Australia at the Lord Cricket Ground.

Mulder-historical re-writing Mulder

Throughout his knock which lasted almost 185 minutes, Mulder played aggressively by hitting the Zimbabwe bowlers all over the park. The Proteas all rounder spared no one be it pacers or spinners and thus he showed no mercy.

His knock contained 49 fours and 4 sixes all through the knock. Mulder had already registered a hundred in the opening Test of the series and he had also registered a knock of 147 runs during the second innings.

Mulder has also made the highest away score by a batting player in Test. Hanif Mohammed of Pakistan with 337 runs achieved against West Indies in 1958 holds the second best position.

Mulder also holds the record of the number of runs scored by a South African player in a Test with 309 runs (118 and 191) beating Graeme Smith who scored 362 (277 and 85) against England at Edgbaston in 2003.

Mulder joined the Zimbabwe series under some pressure because he failed to gel with the bat in the world test championship (WTC) finals against Australia, made in the Lord Cricket Ground, South Africa, this year.

But he has showed the critics that he was wrong and with fanfare.
