Trump Warns of Tariffs on Nations Backing Anti-American BRICS Policies

Trump Warns of Tariffs: US President Donald Trump on Monday sent a warning to BRICS countries: if you side with the anti-American policies of the bloc, you’ll get a 10% tariff.

“Any country aligning themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote in a post on his platform, Truth Social.

This is a new approach, direct and unilateral. The letters are going out just two days before the July 9 deadline to expire the 90-day tariff suspension announced in April.

That earlier proposal was a 10% base tariff on most imports, with the ability to go up to 70% on some countries.

Trump had called these proposals “take it or leave it” offers to speed up talks and implement the planned tariff system.

“The global economy and financial markets have increasingly been subject to elevated uncertainty and bouts of intense volatility,” the joint statement reads. In this context, BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—called for enhanced cooperation, not just within the group but also with other emerging and developed economies.

The warning comes just ahead of the July 9 deadline, the end of the 90-day suspension on Trump-era reciprocal tariffs. BRICS leaders are urging restraint, calling for inclusive globalisation, de-escalation and multilateral solutions for sustainable and balanced growth around the world.

Trump also said he would start sending other countries the first letters on tariffs and trade deals on Monday, ahead of the deadline for the paused tariffs to take effect.

“I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th,” Trump said on his Truth Social network.

Almost half the member countries had their heads of state absent, but key leaders present in Rio included Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa and Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed. Russian president Vladimir Putin and Chinese president Xi Jinping were not there. This was Xi’s first time skipping a BRICS summit since becoming president in 2013, while Putin’s absence was due to an International Criminal Court warrant.
