Uttarakhand Avalanche: 4 Workers Dead, 46 Rescued; Search Continues for 5 Amid Bad Weather

Uttarakhand Avalanche: Hereunder avalanched four workers-dead or trapped in an avalanche in the extremely high-altitude Mana village in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. 55 workers from the Border Roads Organisation trapped under the avalanche on Friday. 50 have been recovered from the snow, and search operations are ongoing for the other five.

As per the Army, the avalanche between 5.30 to 6 on Friday morning buried the BRO workers in eight containers and a shed inside the camp.

Since then, the rescue teams have been braving treacherous terrain, blinding snowfalls, and sub-zero temperatures in a desperate race against time to save the trapped workers.

“A massive avalanche hit the camp, trapping 55 workers there [two of the workers were on leave]. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (IRBP) and Indian Army personnel deployed there quickly started the rescue operations amid snowfall and freezing weather conditions,” Sandeep Tiwari, Chamoli’s district magistrate, said.

The rescue operation on Friday was adversely affected by rain and snow, and with the arrival of night, the operation was called off.

On Saturday, as the weather improved, the helicopters were pressed into action.

While giving details about the blockade, PRO Defence Dehradun stated that six helicopters are involved in this evacuation. Out of these, 3 Cheetah from the Indian Army, 2 Cheetah from the Indian Air Force and 1 Civil Helicopter are included.

Uttarakhand CM conducts aerial survey

Formerly, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami took an aerial survey of the avalanche-hit area. He also interacted with one of the injured labourers who had been airlifted to Jyotirmath for treatment.

"Took stock of the situation by conducting an aerial survey of the avalanche area near Mana in Chamoli district," Dhami said in a post on X.

Besides, he said that he had directed all officials to see that the relief and rescue operations were completed speedily and effectively. "Our government is working promptly for the safety of the affected workers," Dhami added.
