US Woman Flies to Korea in Search of K-Drama Boyfriend, Gets Shocked: ‘We’ve Been Catfished’
An American tourist who arrived in Seoul with the expectation of experiencing a romance like the kind in a K-drama found herself disillusioned when reality failed to meet her expectations.

US Woman Flies to Korea in Search of K-Drama Boyfriend: A U.S. traveler who jet-setted to Seoul anticipating a romance just like in a K-drama was actually left disappointed with reality not being as perceived or expected. She thought the streets would be filled with K-pop idol look-alikes, but she found normal people going about their daily lives, which didn't click well with her.
In the now-viral video, her disappointment has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with a lot of them calling her out on her standards and cultural misconceptions.

When Fantasy Meets Reality
In the video, the woman giddily documents her journey to South Korea. She says, "On my way to Seoul to fall in love with a Korean man." Then her excitement dies down when she starts filming random men on the streets of Seoul, who do not seem to have impressed her much.
It has sired a mocking tone by dramatically cropping it with a tune from the Titanic soundtrack as she zooms in at unsuspecting passersby. At one point, she sarcastically declares, “We’ve been catfished. This is very disturbing. I want to leave immediately.”
Social Media Backlash
The clip took the public by storm, immediately igniting a myriad of reactions that run from amusement to straight-out condemnation. For some, it was amusing to see such exaggerated disappointment, while others condemn her for objectifying people and propagating impossible beauty standards.
One user commented, “Surprise! Real life isn’t a photoshopped music video. Beauty exists in many different forms.”

Another critic remarked, “It’s frustrating when people travel to another country with a fantasy in mind and then belittle real people for not fitting their imagination.”
Others also mentioned the consent issue and questioned why she filmed random strangers without prior permission. “How would she feel if someone came to her country, filmed random people, and judged them like this?” a user questioned.
A Lesson in Cultural Sensitivity?
Much as it is true that the South Korean entertainment industry has definitely gained global recognition with very polished visuals and idol culture, daily lives may not be reflected in mere curation of K-dramas and K-pop. Many netizens therefore believed that the viral incident amplifies a chance for individuals to become aware of culture and appreciate a country beyond pop culture stereotypes.
This traveler seems not to have found the fairytale ending she had hoped for in a K-drama romance. But perhaps this online debate her video sparked might actually serve as a wake-up call for others with similarly unrealistic dreams and expectations.
