Six New Judges Sworn In at Delhi High Court, Working Strength Rises to 40

The transfer of newly promoted judges was officially sworn in by Delhi Chief Justice, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya on Monday who administered the oath of office on them with an elaborate ceremony at the High Court premises.

Of the 6 judges, Justice V. Kameswar Rao, JusticeNitin Wasudeo Sambre justice Vivek Chaudhary, Justice Anil Kshetarpal Justice Arun Kumar Monga, and Justice Om Prakash Shukla were transferred into different High Courts in the nation.

Their appointment gives the working strength of the Delhi High Court to 40 as compared to the stipulated strength of 60.

A number of sitting judges of the Delhi High court, relatives of newly appointed judges, and senior office bearers of the Delhi High Court Bar Association and other Lawyers were the spectators of the oath-taking ceremony.

The ministry of law and justice last week notified the transfers on the basis of the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium on its meeting on May 26.

Justice V Kameswar Rao is back in Delhi High Court after an absence of close to a year after Justice moved to the Karnataka High Court as an Additional Chief Justice. He previously worked in the Delhi bench and transferred in May 2024 after serving more than 11 years. His retirements happen just after elevation of Justice Vibhu Bakhru, the senior-most judge in the court, as Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.

Justice Arun Monga, belonging to the Rajasthan High Court is transferred and thus holds decades of experience in relation with law. He started his legal career in Chandigarh in 1991 and practised in Delhi after that and there practised more than 20 years. He was also a judge of High Court of Punjab and Haryana until his move to Rajasthan late 2023.

Justice Vivek Chaudhary is alumnus of Allahabad high court. A product of Meerut University he has a long experience in the field of civil and constitutional law and has been a judge since 2017.

Justice Anil Kshetarpal who like the other two is also an original of Punjab and Haryana High Court started his practice in Kurukshetra. He would later develop his skills under V K Bali who was the former chief justice.

Another transfer to the bench, who rejoined it in March 2024, was Justice Om Prakash Shukla, a former High Court judge in Allahabad, who had practised during the past two decades in constitutional and service cases.

With a rich litigation experience at Bombay High Court, justice Nitin wasudeo Sambre carries acumen with him. He is a law graduate of Nagpur and after practising in Nagpur, he passed his practice under a former Chief Justice of India, Sharad A. Bobde. In 2014 he was promoted to the Bombay High Court bench.

The appointment of the six judges should go a long way in reducing the workload in courts in the nation capital and increase the case disposal rates. Delhi High Court has been operating with a very small number of benches in the recent years, frequently fighting an increase in the number of pending cases.
