Shatrughan Sinha on Beef Ban & UCC Loopholes: TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha recently sparked a conversation about implementing a nationwide ban on non-vegetarian food items, acknowledging the challenges that come with India's regional differences.
He used this example to highlight the difficulties in enforcing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country. However, Sinha praised Uttarakhand's successful implementation of the common law, showcasing a positive example of UCC enforcement.
He said that the initiative should not be viewed as a political move for elections, stressing the need for a multi-party meeting to ensure broad consensus.
Sinha also voiced his support for beef bans but highlighted the importance of consistency across different regions.

"Beef has been banned in many parts of the country. I think that not only beef, but non-vegetarian food in general should be banned in the country. However, in some places it is still legal to consume beef, including the northeast. Waha khao toh yummy, par humare North India mein khao toh mummy (It is okay to eat it in the northeast, but not in North India)," he quipped while addressing reporters outside Parliament.
“What happened in Uttarakhand, I would say that as a nation, we must acknowledge it as necessary. A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) should indeed be implemented and it is something that all citizens of the country would agree upon. However, there are many fine prints and complexities in this matter. It is important to ensure that the concerns of various communities and groups are addressed. It cannot be that suddenly one day, it is imposed in a way that people feel it’s just for votes or elections,” Sinha told ANI.
"But this is not going to work, a ban should be enforced everywhere, not just in certain parts," Sinha added.

"An all-party meeting must be held before drafting UCC provisions. Everyone should be consulted for their opinions and thoughts on the issue. The UCC should not be looked at as an election or vote bank strategy but should be handled with care and caution," he stressed.
The Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 was passed by the state assembly on February 7, 2024. But the law had not come into effect in the absence of the rules.
Meanwhile, Gujarat is moving forward with implementing the UCC, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announcing a five-member panel to draft the code. The committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, will submit its report within 45 days.
