Reliance Jio Faces Subscriber Loss: Embattled Reliance chairman Mukesh Amabani is in for a rude shock as Jio, the largest telecom operator in the country, lost a whopping 79.7 lakh subscribers, in the month of September during this calendar year, as revealed in the latest report by The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The main cause of the subscriber churn is that Jio along with others had raised their tariffs in the recent past. Furthermore, while there was an alarming decline in Jio’s subscriber base, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) remarkably managed to attract 8.5 lakh users overtly defying industry trends. The public telecom service provider was the only one to gain subscribers.

As of late, Vodafone Idea Ltd. has been in the red territory, having lost 1.55 million subscribers. This is indicative of the company’s difficulties with retaining customers as a result of financial challenges. Likewise, Bharti Airtel Ltd, performed similarly, albeit managed to maintain operations in that city and exclusive segments of the market but still ended up losing 1.43 million subscribers in that month.
The impossible happened to Jio who even put up in air warm campaigns urging people to subscribe to their services. The dancing is well and good but the traffic is not coming in owing in this case to their core service value which Jio has been noted for since inception, winning new subscribers.
The government-owned telecom operator managed to gain 8.5 lakh new subscribers in September, all within a month. Earning this new clientele, the said operator has been able to provide its low priced services to the masses and also enhanced its services in the rural areas.

It is curious why the government owned firm has been more advantageous in the recent past than the private owned individuals. This is surprising as it has been known that Bharti Airtel, a company that has concentrated on improvement of services for both 4G and 5G networks, subscribes over 400 million even with its Relaxed Services.
According to the most recent data collected from the TRAI report, there is a significant improvement in the reduction of 20 percent unregistered telemarketers and spam calls’ complaints. To elaborate, the number of complaints fell from 189000 in August 2024 to 151000 by October 2024. It seems that the measures taken by TRAI in August to restrict promotional calls from unregistered sources were proactive. In addition to this, a two-year blacklist policy for everyone found guilty of these violations was implemented as well by TRAI.
TRAI, the Indian telecommunication regulator has been organizing webinars targeting businesses and telemarketers as part of initiatives to reduce telephone spam. The webinars address issues such as the adoption of 140 series of numbers for DLT based applications and message trace enhancements. Accordingly, there have been two such webinars with more than 1800 participants including the Reserve Bank of India, the Securities Exchange Board of India, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India among others. Hence, more than 13, 000 insti tutions have registered with telecom providers already and more registrations are coming in.
