Putin Open to Lasting Peace Deal with Ukraine, Says Trump Envoy Steven Witkoff After ‘Compelling’ Meeting

Putin Open to Lasting Peace Deal with Ukraine: Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of President Donald Trump, stated that the meeting with Vladimir Putin was "compelling" and that the Russian leader seemed to be somewhat receptive to establishing a long-lasting peace with Ukraine.

Witkoff traversed St. Petersburg last Friday to meet with Putin regarding the phasing out of the war that had lasted three years in the Trump administration's opinion.

“I think we might be on the verge of something very important for the world,” Steve Witkoff told Fox News on Monday, adding that “it took a while for us to get to this place.”

Witkoff stated that he felt that after five hours with Putin, a deal was "emerging."He also spoke of “a possibility to reshape the Russian-United States relationship through some very compelling commercial opportunities that I think give real stability to the region too.”

Trump calls Ukraine conflict “Biden's war”

His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump Monday called the war in Ukraine "Biden's war" and stated that the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, had a hand in starting it.

“The war between Russia and Ukraine is Biden’s war, not mine. I just got here, and for four years during my term, had no problem in preventing it from happening,” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“President Putin, and everyone else, respected your President! I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS WAR, BUT AM WORKING DILIGENTLY TO GET THE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION TO STOP,” he added.

The 78-year-old further added that Kyiv could still be a deal-breaker even while negotiations between the two sides were still aiming to set an arrangement whereby Washington gains access to Ukraine's much-coveted mineral resources.

It envisions a set of agreements whereby the United States would have access to royalty payments from profits from Ukrainian mining of these materials and rare minerals in return for the military and financial aid being extended by Joe Biden to Ukraine.

The Republican had turned his ire against Zelensky, accusing him of a failing military strategy. “When you start a war, you need to be sure you can win. You don’t begin a conflict with someone 20 times your size and then hope people will send you missiles,” Trump said.
