According to the passenger list documents seen by Mint, Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was reported to be among the 242 people who were aboard the Air India flight. Air India has confirmed that there were as many as 169 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian on the plane.

The former Gujarat Chief Minister was reported to have been travelling in the Z class, a Business Class category, though there no confirmation of his status as emergency rescue is still in progress. Vijay Rupani served as Gujarat Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021, a very similar position that Narendra Modi had for 12 years (2001 to 2014).

The Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner running from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar, just minutes after take-off.

It is understood that the crash happened at around 1:30 pm, after the Air India flight took off and crashed less than a mile from the Ahmedabad airport. Although the cause of the Air India flight crash is not known at this stage, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has said that a ‘MAYDAY' call was made by the pilot.

“As per ATC, aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. Aircraft Immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on ground outside the airport perimeter.”

The video of the airplane crash has shown thick black smoke coming from the Air India flight crash area.
