Perplexity Launches AI-powered Browser for Windows: Perplexity is planning to open up its Comet browser, which is powered by "agentic search" to Windows users, according to the company's CEO. Aravind Srinivas posted on X that the Windows build of Comet is ready and has sent out invites to early testers already. Perplexity's CEO also hinted at a potential release for Android devices, adding that it was "moving at a crazy pace and moving ahead of schedule."

In May, Perplexity launched a beta version of its AI-powered Comet browser, only available to Mac users running Apple Silicon. The intelligent browser comes with AI features baked in, like the ability to ask it questions, check shopping carts for discounts, and dig up unanswered emails. The beta version even showcases a "Try on" feature where users can upload a photo of themselves, and Comet will generate an image of them wearing a selected piece of clothing.

Although Perplexity has not set an official launch date, the CEO hinted at a wider release soon and continues to accept sign-ups via a waitlist. The browser has attracted attention not only for its AI features but also for privacy concerns. Srinivas previously made a statement suggesting Comet would collect data beyond the app to better understand users, which sparked debate. He later clarified that users will have the option to opt out of personalisation related to targeted advertising.

When Comet officially launches, it will enter a competitive market alongside browsers like Opera Neon and AI-driven products from Google and OpenAI

Comet is not your typical Chrome replica. Designed to be an AI-native browser, it features less URL bar and a more intelligent assistant built into the whole surfing experience. Already vying with ChatGPT, Google's Chrome, and Microsoft's Copilot, Perplexity's bread and butter is its conversational search engine.

Inside Comet, this artificial intelligence backbone becomes the standard approach for web content interaction, search, and summary. Rather than ten blue links, you receive actual answers- annotated, sourced, and usually real-time.

“Comet is a Chromium-based browser that integrates advanced AI capabilities powered by Perplexity. Unlike traditional browsers, Comet combines web browsing with intelligent features that enhance productivity and information access,” Perplexity notes on its official blog.''

AI-powered browsing is now the trend in the artificial intelligence space as more companies are pushing the integration of their generative models to existing or new browsers in the tech space. Google launched its different takes on AI-powered browsing, first starting with "AI Overviews" which include summarized briefs on top of results. The most recent version is the "AI Mode," which transforms all search results into an AI-generated write-up.

Many companies have focused on delivering "agentic," AI, which is focused on bringing "agents" that adhere to the user's specific needs and specialize in various processes. Instead of being "reactive" to what a user asks for, the AI agents are now "proactive" to what they need, with the technology now anticipating what users want, bringing more autonomy to different situations.

That being said, there are now various companies that look to combine these two advancements together, centering on an AI-powered search platform that is capable of agentic capabilities in a browser. Perplexity is now leveraging the Comet to bring significant experiences to users that elevate web browsers, with the experience branching out to Windows and eventually to Android.
