Gambhir Slams Desk, Bumrah Frustrated, Gill Holds Back as Jaiswal Drops Another Sitter

The inconsistent slip-catching problems for India continued when Jaiswal dropped yet another opportunity off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah in the last ball of the 85th over. Jaiswal was at gully, but could not hold on to a basic chance by Harry Brook, who played a loose dab outside off to a short-of-length delivery. The ball was at a comfortable height, but Jaiswal could not grab the ball, and he has now added to a list of allows that have not helped India's fielding performance in the Test.

The drop did not do Bumrah any good, who, for the second day in a row, had his hands covering his face in frustration. This had been the fourth caught-drop off Bumrah's bowling in this innings alone - and, incidentally, Jaiswal's third. Shubman Gill could help but be annoyed standing next to Jaiswal, throwing his arms in the air as he too was aghast that it had gone begging.

He doesn't deserve a place in that slip cordon with such poor fielding skills get him out of there ???????????? , 3 catch's in one match pic.twitter.com/T4SVuxaEdX

The other members of the slip cordon were still frozen in disbelief, resigned to allowing yet another break-through in which they failed to convert. Meanwhile, in the dressing room, head coach Gautam Gambhir mirrored their mood, slamming the table with the ball and visibly shaking his head in anger as the replays, not for the first time, flashed up on the screen.

It was a costly drop, as Brook was closing in on his century; he was batting on 82 when Jaiswal put down the catch. What is intriguing is that Brook had already been dropped earlier that day, although that was a more challenging chance. Rishabh Pant had dropped the catch from Ravindra Jadeja's delivery, although the deflection was so great that Pant did not have the timing to change his reflexes.

What is ironic is that just before play started on Day 3, Jaiswal was spotted going through an individual slip-catching activity, separated from the team and standing just at slip. It was a direct reaction to earlier drops that had caused India dearly and it was a self-corrective action that expressed his desire to improve. But when it came to live action, those practices did not lead to the required outcome.

Brook was eventually dismissed just one short of his century when Prasidh Krishna bounced him out for 99, as despite being hit for maximum, he top edged the ball from deep square leg for an easy catch for Shardul Thakur.
