Onam festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

Onam 2024: Date and Timings
This year, the Onam festival will be celebrated on September 15, and the Thiruvonam Nakshatram starts at 8:32 pm on September 14 and ends at 6:49 pm on September 15.
Onam 2024 History
According to Hindu mythology, King Mahabali was a kind and important ruler of Kerala. Under King Mahabal's rule, the kingdom was very rich and peaceful, people loved their king a lot.
But the Deities were jealous of King Mahabali rule, defeated him, and assigned Lord Vishnu to test him. Lord Vishnu, disguised as Vamana Avatar requested three feet of ground and in two steps covered all the world.
King Mahabali asked Vamana to put his third step on his head and took him to the netherworld. However, Kerala people celebrate the Onam festival to welcome King Mahabali home every year.

Onam 2024 Significance
Onam festival is a very important festival in the Hindu religion and is specially celebrated by the south Indian people. This festival is celebrated on a large scale with great pomp and excitement.
On this day, the South Indian people offer prayers to Lord Vamana and King Mahabali to seek blessings for health and longevity, devotees also show their gratitude for good crops. Devotees also decorate their houses with flowers and create rangoli, they also make delicious sweets as an offering to lords.
Kerala people also perform several cultural events to honor the Onam festival.
