Northeast monsoon 2024 weather update

Northeast monsoon 2024 weather update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert that the northeast monsoon has arrived in South Peninsular India early this year and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana have experienced widespread heavy rainfall.

South India rainfall next 4-5 days is expected because of the formation of several low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, as reported by IMD.

The southwest monsoon departed from the country on October 15 and on the same, the northeast monsoon entered the southern region of India.

The northeast monsoon usually brings rain in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala between October and December.

As per the study, the normal date for the arrival of the northeast monsoon is October 20.

The northeast monsoon heavy rain forecast said that this October, there has been 24.6% more rain than usual in peninsular India when the northeast monsoon generally arrives.

As per the reports, Tamil Nadu has experienced 82% excess rain while Karnataka 46%, and Andhra Pradesh, has 38% over the course of the last 15 days.

IMD forecast said October most regions of India will experience abnormal rainfall and are likely to have above-normal temperatures during the day and at night in most parts.

Furthermore, peninsular India also received 14% excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon.

On Wednesday, a depression formed over the western central Bay of Bengal and the area around it. On Thursday, it crossed the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Nellore.

IMD said, “Considering various environmental conditions and model guidance, it is inferred that, there is a high probability of cyclogenesis (formation of depression) over the central Bay of Bengal from October 23 to 24. The existing cyclonic circulation over North Lakshadweep is likely to move west-northwestwards during the next 3-5 days.”

Skymet Weather climate and weather Vice president, Mahesh Palawat said, “The low-pressure area, likely to develop over central Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify further. But it is difficult to tell which region it will impact the most.”
