Mohanlal Bounces Back in 2025, Rules Mollywood with ₹500 Crore Cumulative Gross
Anyone who even questioned him after Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz 3D were silenced after releases of L2 Empuraan, Thudarum even Chotta Mumbai.

Mohanlal Bounces Back in 2025: The movies Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz 3D did not help Mohanlal kick off 2024 in a great way. Failures were part of the star’s life, who got his start with the 1980 movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal and experienced many changes over all these years.
Some individuals asked if ‘lalettan’ was gradually losing contact with his fans. What he said to the doubters? Making over ₹500 crore at the box office on Mollywood films all by himself in 2025.

How 2024 fared for Mohanlal
In 2024, Mohanlal’s movies Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz 3D gathered ₹29.75 crore and ₹15.1 crore worldwide, covering only an average amount as per Sacnilk. Even if Malayalam movies on low budgets may do well with these numbers, it still ended badly for both because their productions were more costly.
A lot of attention was placed on the latter as a true game changer, but it was criticized for the poor special effects, while the first simply didn’t reach the large audience its makers thought it should.
Mohanlal rules Mollywood in 2025
At that point, it was 2025. L2 Empuraan, which came out this March, became the most financially successful Malayalam film ever. The film made its way to be the second biggest Indian movie in 2025 with a total profit of ₹265.5 crore. These figures are not seen in Malayalam films before.

The next film by Yash, Thudarum released in April, managed to bring in ₹234.5 crore worldwide and is the fourth greatest hit of the year in India. A majority of these movies have earned a cumulative amount of more than ₹500 crore. But it doesn’t stop there, since ₹1.05 crore was also earned on the re-release of his 2007 film Chotta Mumbai in just two days.
Upcoming work
It can be said that Mollywood has always been praised for its sensitive, engaging, and smart films, but earning profits at the box office has been a challenge till this point. Mohanlal’s future release slate includes the stomach churning action-drama Vrusshabha, to be released 16 October and the family drama Hridayapoorvam, releasing beforehand on 28 August.
There is also a juggernaut in the making, featuring Mohanlal, Mammootty and Fahadh Faasil in one film, which could be next game changing thing from Kerala.
