The investigation is about Messi and David Beckham, Inter Miami co-owner, regarding an incidence in Peru.

Lionel Messi and David Beckham Under Investigation in Peru: Inter Miami commenced the pre-season tour across North and South America. The tour has already taken the team to Peru, where they faced Universitario, a first-division team, at Monumental U Marathon Stadium in Lima on Wednesday. The match ended in a draw with a score of 0-0, but the visitors took the win in penalties: 5-4.

Meanwhile, Messi's trip to Peru has been marred by rumors, as the Argentine superstar was absent during the club's Meet and Greet fan event preceding the game. The reports indicate that the fans paid about 3000 soles ( ₹69,675) to meet with the 2022 World Cup winner, who, however, opted out of the event without it being communicated to Peruvians.
Indecopi, the National Consumer Protection Authority of Peru, has since kicked off an investigation into the incident. In an official statement, the body stated, “In light of the complaints regarding the absence of footballer Lionel Messi at the Meet & Greet event prior to the friendly match between Inter Miami and Universitario de Deportes, Indecopi has launched actions to determine whether there has been a breach of advertising regulations and/or any infringement of consumer rights by the event organizers.”Miami co-owner Jorge Mas recently said, “Leo and I will sit down to discuss the future.”

Messi was missing from the event, but was listed on the Miami starting roster for the match. This mirrors an incident at Miami's preseason friendly in Hong Kong last year when Messi didn't play a minute. 38,323 fans filled the stadium that night and paid over 1,000 dollars in Hong Kong ($11,114). Spectators present there began chanting for refunds and booed co-owner David Beckham with thumbs-down gestures at the final whistle.
Messi's contract with Miami ends this year, with another year as an option. Talking about whether he would actually extend with the MLS, Miami co-owner Jorge Mas recently said, “Leo and I will sit down to discuss the future.”
“I fully expect that when our new stadium opens in 2026, Leo Messi will be our number 10.”
