Kolkata Gang-Rape Case: Accused Once Sought Death Penalty in RG Kar Incident; Minister Detained During Protest

On Saturday, June 9, Union minister and the West Bengal state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was detained as he agitated against gang-rape of a student in a law college in Kolkata.
In a X post, Majumdar wrote he was arrested along with his party leaders by the Kolkata Police under an instruction by the chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

"When we staged a protest at Gariahat crossing in south Kolkata against the gangrape of a law college student by TMC’s appointed student leader Manojit Mishra and his associates under the cover of darkness, the Kolkata Police acting on the orders of failed chief minister Mamata Banerjee unjustly arrested me along with the BJP’s state and district leaders," the BJP state chief said in the X post.

Kolkata Police took Majumdar away in a police vehicle, which was also shown in a video, which was posted by news agency ANI.
"This is the face of democracy in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has ruined democracy in the state," the BJP leader told ANI.
This protest follows after last week first-year law student of South Calcutta Law College was raped by three men including a former student.

Three suspects including the prime suspect, Manojit Mishra have been arrested so far together with a security guard.
Sambit Patra, the national spokesperson of the BJP, said that main accused used to serve in the student union of the Trinamool Congress and other accused also have position in the student union. The TMC, has though, rejected any relation with the accused.
Patra also added that the president of the BJP J P Nadda has constituted a four-member committee which will visit the state and look into the matter and report.
According to him, the committee shall include Biplab Kumar Deb, the MP and Manan Kumar Mishra, the MP and Satyapal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, all the former parliamentarians.
