The film, which had its theatrical release on January 17, 2023, presented the story of the most controversial period in Indian history- the Emergency of 1975-77- from the actress's own perspective: she portrayed Indira Gandhi herself. Besides acting in the lead role, Kangana also directed and produced the film, offering her take on the political turmoil that was the context of the film.
Emergencies are star-Studded by Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman and the untimely Satish Kaushik. It tries to shallowly analyze the decisions taken by Indira Gandhi and their implications for the nation.

This very film was controversial even before its release. The film was plagued by several delays in its release, was undergoing scrutiny by censor board, and had to face protests from Sikh groups. In August 2023, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) served the filmmakers with a legal notice to them alleging that certain scenes distorted Sikh history and feelings. Modifications were forced due to the protests; they were finally released.
Despite all the issues surrounding it, Emergency remains one of Kangana's boldest projects and yet another courageous move in her career. Now, with its digital premiere on March 17, one and all will be able to watch how she interprets a key chapter of Indian history from their very own homes.
