Jitiya Vrat 2024: Significance of Eating Madua Roti and Fish Before the Fast

This fast is mainly observed in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and this year it will be on September 25. There are special rituals to be followed and that includes eating madua roti and fish.

According to Pandit Manotpal Jha, the Jitiya fast begins with eating madua and fish which shows the unique belief of this fast. During this fast mothers worship Chilho Siyar and pray for their children.
According to Pandit Manotpal Jha in Hindu tradition non vegetarian food is not allowed but during Jitiya fast fish and madua roti is the first meal. This is based on a mythological story. In ancient times madua was grown in abundance and fish was plenty during rainy season so this particular meal became a part of the fast.
On Jitiya fast which is on September 24th and 25th this year, devotees have to follow some rituals. On 24th September they take a bath and have a meal. On 25th September they will observe Nirjala fast.
The fast can be broken on 26th September after 5:05 am and devotees can break their fast at any time after sunrise. Before breaking the fast devotees take bath and pay homage to Jimutvahan Devta at their homes. The traditional dishes to break the fast are Noni Saag, Torai ki Sabzi, Ragi Roti and Arbi.
In the beautiful Mithila region of Bihar a special tradition is followed during Jitiya fast. People eat roti made of madua flour and jivani ki sabzi. Women offer prasad in the name of Jimutvahan and pray for long and healthy life of their sons.
According to Panchang Jitiya fast is traditionally observed on Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin. The fast begins with Nahay-Khay ritual a purifying bathing ceremony and then Paran ceremony. Both Nahay-Khay and Paran are very important part of Jitiya Vrat and adds to the tradition.
