Jasprit Bumrah’s ‘One Over of Doom’ Ends Gujarat Titans’ IPL Dream, Sparks Sachin Tendulkar Comparison

Jasprit Bumrah came through in the clutch once again, cranking up the pressure on the Gujarat Titans en route to Mumbai Indians’ 20-run victory in the IPL 2025 Eliminator with a typical demolition of death bowling. With the Titans positioned to launch a remarkable chase in Mullanpur, it was Bumrah’s brilliant over that broke the Titans’ charge and cemented his place as the tournament's most feared weapon with the ball.

Gujarat were in cruise control with 151 runs on the board at 13.3 overs while chasing down a monstrous target of 229 runs when Bumrah made the breakthrough that changed the game. Bumrah delivered a wicked yorker to remove Washington Sundar who had blitzed 48 runs off 24 balls and was striking at a rate of 200. Once Bumrah dismissed Sundar, the remainder of Gujarat’s innings fell apart as they lost momentum, eventually sinking to 208 runs for 6.

“Bumrah did his work like he always does. If he had not taken Washington's wicket, he was batting at a strike rate of 200, the match might have been a lot more tight. I used to remember Shane Warne being haunted by Sachin Tendulkar in his dreams, now in this age, every batter is haunted by Bumrah in their dreams,” former KKR batter Manoj Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.

The Mumbai pacer finished the night with bowling numbers of 1/27 in four overs with his final over including a pitiful eight runs. But more than the numbers, it was Bumrah’s wicket and influence on the game that was decisive. Sundar in particular, provided a valuable partnership at a time where Gujarat was in cruise control and scrambling to produce answers when Bumrah dismissed Sundar.

Tiwary on MI after Bumrah made return

Tiwary also declared that Bumrah’s injury return was a pivotal moment in MI’s campaign.

“The success that MI have now, their mantra has been Bumrah. Ever since he has joined the team from injury, MI's results have picked up. It is a fact, there are no two ways about it. When Bumrah is there, their bowling gets so strong that more than half of the work is sorted for the captain, because he is never expensive in his spell,” said the former batter.

"Captain Hardik Pandya said the same thing after the match, "Whenever you feel that the game is going away from you, just give him the ball".

With 18 wickets in 11 games at an economy of 6.36, Bumrah remains Mumbai's biggest weapon going into Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad.
