According to Jaishankar, in his introductory speech in the meeting, India was very supportive of a successful Chinese presidency of the SCO and expressed the stable improvement of relationships since Prime Minister Modi met with President Jinping in Kazan in October. He added that he was optimistic that this trip would also make sure that the positive momentum stays in existence.

"Let me say that it is a pleasure to be with you during my visit to the SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting. India supports a successful Chinese presidency at the SCO. Our bilateral relationship, as you have pointed out, has been steadily improving since the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan last October. I am confident that my discussions on this visit will maintain that positive trajectory," Jaishankar said.

In view of the complex nature of international affairs, the minister using the example of India and China as neighbours and key economies, asserted that the two countries are compelled to openly share outlooks and opinions.
