A week into the war with Iran, Israel and Iran exchanged strikes on Friday (June 20, 2025) as President Donald Trump contemplated U.S. military options and senior European ministers met with top Iranian diplomat in Geneva in a flurry of diplomacy trying to de-escalate the situation.
After four hours of negotiations, the first in-person meeting between Iranian and western officials since the war started did not yield any immediate results to solve the crisis.
To allow diplomacy to work, Mr. Trump said he would delay making a choice on possibly joining Israel's air campaign against Iran for a maximum of two weeks. If the U.S. military joins the conflict, it would likely include strikes against Fordo underground uranium enrichment facility, which is only thought to be reachable by the U.S. military's "bunker buster" bombs.

U.S. military options aside, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel would continue the military campaign in Iran "for as long as it takes" to remove what he called an existential threat from Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missile stockpile.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated after discussions in Geneva with his European colleagues about Iran's nuclear programme that Tehran was prepared to "consider diplomacy" again only once Israel's "aggression is stopped."
