Iran Attacks Israel: Israel says 8 soldiers killed in “intense fighting” with Hezbollah in Lebanon, 3 days into ground ops. Almost a year after Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, the IDF announced Monday it was launching “limited, local and targeted” ground raids against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Two weeks of airstrikes on Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut have killed over 1,000 and displaced 1 million.

The airstrikes — and the secret ops beforehand that saw thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies carried by Hezbollah fighters blown up with explosives — had largely dismantled the US-designated terrorist organization. Its leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed on Sept. 27 and at least 6 other senior figures and dozens of mid-level operatives have been killed. But as Israel was about to launch its ground op, Hezbollah’s second in command declared the group ready for war.
Here’s a look at how the two enemies ended up at war again for the first time since a one-month war in 2006 that killed over 1,000 in Lebanon and over 150 in Israel — and what’s at stake now after Iran-backed Hezbollah launched its Oct. 1 missile attack on Israel and the US is worried it could get drawn in.
The IDF confirmed Wednesday 8 soldiers were killed in the cross-border ops, with initial statement saying Captain Eitan Itzhak Oster, 22, “fell during combat in southern Lebanon”. The IDF later named 7 other soldiers killed in combat.

The military said the soldiers were killed in two separate events and 6 troops, including an officer, were severely wounded in the same events. The IDF did not elaborate on the circumstances of the events.
Earlier Wednesday the IDF ordered people in southern Lebanon to leave their homes and evacuate north of the country, away from the border with Israel as its cross-border ops to hunt down Hezbollah fighters and destroy their weapons and infrastructure appeared to escalate.
IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee posted on social media: “Intense fighting in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah is using the civilian environment and citizens as a human shield to carry out attacks.”
Adraee issued a new evacuation order to residents in 24 towns and villages in southern Lebanon on top of the 28 villages he told residents to evacuate Monday.
