History and Significance

The Agreement on Biological Diversity was first talked about at the Earth Summit in 1992 and then came into effect by the UN General Assembly in 1993.

At first, it was celebrated on December 29 but in the 20s, it was moved to May 22 to honor the day the CBD's remark which was approved in 1992.

This day is observed as an important day for Plants, animals, and other living species on this planet Earth.

A 2022 report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) states that since 1970, mammal, bird, reptile, fish, and amphibian species have declined by 69%.

Thus, several individuals who love nature, organizations, NGOs, and many other body to combine their efforts to recover what we have lost and protect the species that are about to extinct.

The theme for this year's International Day for Biodiversity which is observed on May 22 is “Be part of the plan.” In 2023 the theme was "From agreement to action: Build back biodiversity.”
