International Asteroid Day 2024: The Universe consists of Space, time, and contents, it is filled with unimaginable surprises. It is filled with planets, comets, and asteroids.

However, asteroids are a type of metal or icy bodies or rocky forms and are very different in size and form because they don't have atmospheres.

These asteroids can be as small as a pile of rocks or as big as dwarf planets with diameters over 1000 kilometers.

These asteroids can be dangerous when they hit Earth's atmosphere causing mass destruction. Thus, to spread awareness among people about asteroids we observe a special day.

International Asteroid Day 2024 Date

On June 30, Sunday we celebrate International Asteroid Day to educate people about the impact of an Asteroid if it falls on Earth and how to take precautions beforehand.

International Asteroid Day 2024 History and Significance

The International Asteroid Day was introduced during the Tunguska Event of 1908 when a major asteroid fell in the Krasnoyarsk Krai area of Siberia which caused a blast with 3 to 50 megatons of force.

This Asteroid fall is considered one of the biggest asteroid impacts ever reported.

However, after this event, Apollo 9 astronaut, Stephen Hawking, and guitarist Brian May founded the International Asteroid Day.

The International Asteroid Day was introduced in 2014 but the United Nations officially observed International Asteroid Day on June 30, 2016. This day was chosen to honor the Tunguska Event.

The significance of this day is to educate people around the world more about asteroids and their impact on Earth.

Several events are held on this day by organizations or groups to gather people who are interested in activities and research about asteroids. This day also educates on precautions we should take before and Asteroid hits the earth.
