India’s First Suspected Mpox Case: India’s first suspect Mpox (monkeypox) case involves a young man, who recently travelled to a country that had the disease outbreak. He is symptomatic but not severe; Samples have been obtained for a confirmatory PCR test.
Health officials have started contact tracing and are handling the case following protocols on sources and extent within the country of India. This situation corresponds to the earlier risk assessment done by NCNC.
Officials stress there is no cause for alarm, stating, "the country is well-prepared to handle isolated travel-related cases." They also said that appropriate strategies were adopted and put in place to eradicate any possible risk.
Mpox or what used to be called monkeypox is a virus that is transferred to humans from infected animals but can also spread from man to man through close physical contact. It can rarely be fatal and at worst produces fever, muscular pain and huge pustules such as a boil in the skin.

The WHO declared an outbreak an international level emergency on 14 August because of cases of Clade 1b in the Democratic Republic of Congo and then it Member countries. That vaccination campaign against Mpox in Congo is due to start on October 2.
The year 2022 pandemic was due to Clade 2 which is prevalent and active even in the developed countries. However, the current one in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is caused by Clade 1 strain, and this has been compounded by the coming of a new version variant 1b.
”The risk and transmissibility of the variant are hard to determine,” stated the WHO adding that new infections linked to Clade 1b have surged although “only a few deaths ha[s] been reported. ”

The virus was first isolated in 1958 from rhesus monkeys use for laboratory purposes in Denmark though it was first identified in humans in 1970 in Zaire, now called DRC.
Indians authorities are still watching the situation closely and are doing everything possible to contain the disease from spreading. This is the reason contact tracing still proves useful in case there are more cases to identify and isolate.
