India Women Crush England by 97 Runs in 1st T20I

India pipped England by 97 runs in the first T20I of their five match series played at Trent bridge in Nottingham, on Saturday, June 28.

England Women did not perform well in the field or bowling, and the best contribution was by Lauren Bell, who managed 3/27. Both Arlott (Em) and Sophie Ecclestone had wickets although they were a bit costly.

India Women came in strong in the batting, showing a total of 210/5 in their 20 overs after their name was called to take the first inning. The openers provided a good platform with 77-run partnership. Shafali Verma too scored a smart 20 before being bounced out and Smriti Mandhana played the innings of substance.

In divine form, Mandhana, aided Harleen Deol to bag a quick 94-run stand. Deol came in for a brisk cameo of 43 and Mandhana got her maiden T20I century. Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma made vital contributions at the theatrical end and India was on its way to a mammoth total.

The Indian women bowlers implemented effectively on their strategy which was to restrict the boundary scorers by them hitting with the strength of the wind blowing against them. The bowling dep knew its drill, as the debutant Shree Charani ended up with 4wins, with Radha Yadav and Deepti Sharma taking 2 apiece, Amanjot Kaur and Arundhati Reddy taking 1 wicket each.

England Women found themselves in the situation where they had to score soon and India created an opportunity. The only strong contribution came by Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Tammy Beaumont (49 run alliance) wherein Natalie put up a fierce 66. It was however defeated heavily, with the rest of the lineup not supporting her. India were ruthless in the field capitalizing on the opportunities that came their way.
