India Reports 2,710 New Covid-19 Cases: India is once again witnessing an unsettling rise in COVID-19 cases, with the number of active infections climbing to 2,710, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest update as of 8:00 AM IST, May 31, 2025.

Leading the current spike is Kerala, which reported 227 fresh infections, pushing its active caseload to 1,147; nearly half of the country’s total. Meanwhile, West Bengal added 59 new cases, increasing its active tally to 116, while the national capital Delhi recorded 56 new infections, taking its active cases to 294.

Maharashtra, another state that has seen consistent rises in previous waves, reported 84 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections recorded this year to 681, as per the state’s public health department. The state now has 467 active cases.

The released data shows that there have been two deaths in Delhi due to COVID since January 2025. Among this was a 60-year-old woman who died with Acute Intestinal Obstruction.

In Kerala, five people have died due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, most deaths in January 2025 have been reported from Maharashtra, with a total of 7 people who lost their lives. A total of 22 deaths have been reported in all states.

Delhi currently reports 294 active cases — an increase of 56 since the previous day — and one death. The deceased was identified as a “60-year-old female with Acute Intestinal Obstruction Post Laparotomy, with incidental Covid-19 finding.”

On May 23, the Delhi government issued an advisory instructing hospitals to ensure sufficient availability of beds, oxygen, essential medications, and operational equipment, including ventilators and BiPAP machines.

"Both our Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are fully alert and closely monitoring the situation across all states. We have spoken with the respective Health and AYUSH Secretaries, as well as other concerned ministers," Jadhav told ANI. He added that the infrastructure developed during the earlier COVID-19 waves has been reviewed and that preparations are underway to deal with any eventuality.

"We've reviewed the infrastructure built during the earlier COVID waves, such as oxygen plants and ICU beds, and have already begun preparations. Our health systems are well-equipped and ready to handle any situation that may arise in response to COVID," he said.
