IIT Bombay Responds to '36% Graduates Without Placement' Headlines with Data Analysis

IIT Bombay Responds to 36% Graduates Without Placement Headlines: The institute shared on social media that 36% of graduating students didn't get jobs at IIT Bombay in 2022-23.
A survey by IIT Bombay revealed that 6.1% of graduates are looking for work, whereas 57.1% got a job through the institute's placement process. 12.2% of students went on to get a degree, while 8.3% went to work for the government.
"Lately there has been news that over 30% of IITB students do not get jobs! An exit survey among graduating students in 2022-23 says only 6.1% are still looking for jobs. Here is the survey result for you to decide..." IIT Bombay posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Additionally, 10.9% of students found jobs outside of IIT Bombay, while 1.6% started their own businesses. 4.3% still haven't decided.

In the 2022-23 batch of IIT Bombay, 57.1% of students got jobs through college placements.
"It was a struggle to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown," said an officer from IIT Bombay's placement office.
"Most companies faced challenges accepting the institute's salary packages, requiring several rounds of negotiation before they agreed to take part," the officer said.
Overall, 12.2% of students went for a higher degree, 10.3% went for an off-campus job outside IIT Bombay, 8.3% went for public services, and 1.6% joined startups. 4.3% are "still deciding", and 6.1% are looking for employment.
This year, 36% of the 712 registered candidates failed to secure jobs in the IIT Bombay placements.
Students enrolled in IIT Bombay's Computer Science and Engineering branch, which is typically highly coveted, did not receive full placement for the first time.
IIT Bombay later clarified that only 22 students received job offers worth crores in January.
