Indian-Origin Entrepreneur Clarifies Remarks on IIT Candidate: ‘IIT candidate didn't know 95% of things on resume'

Indian-Origin Entrepreneur Clarifies Remarks on IIT Candidate: Angad Daryani, the CEO of an Indian startup who recently shared a few unpleasant experiences with IIT candidates, has clarified his "slip up" by saying he deleted the original post since it turned out to be "IIT bashing" rather than his intended message.

Daryani discussed an unsettling experience with an "IIT Kharagpur" graduate who had applied for a position with his startup Praan on X on April 1.

His X (previously Twitter) thread detailing three unpleasant experiences with IIT candidates was picked up by several news agencies. On April 3, he clarified that his previous post had been deleted "because it turned out to be IIT bashing rather than what it was intended to be."

"Candidate from IIT Kharagpur who applied on our website, had mentioned 100 things on his resume, of which he knew five. He had four offers from other companies based on these 100 listed things, and when we quickly picked on the fact that he didn't actually know 95 percent of the things on his resume, he said, 'Oh wow, I respect you, now I want to work in your company.' What are they teaching at the IITs?" he had written in his original post.

The first candidate had been from IIT Kanpur, not IIT Kharagpur, he noted.

According to the candidate, he lacked proficiency in 95 percent of the things listed on his resume despite having a lengthy resume.

As a result of the viral tweet detailing three unpleasant experiences with IIT candidates, Daryani clarified that he had misidentified the institute of the first candidate, stating that he was from IIT Kharagpur instead of IIT Kanpur.

"With regards to the candidate, it was my slip up looking at the IITK email address, the candidate was from the Kanpur campus and not Kharagpur campus, nonetheless we still spoke with him, have encouraged him to clean up his resume, learn few more things and write back to us to be re-evaluated as a mechanical engineer and not a mix of every engineer - I spoke with him personally," Daryani wrote on Wednesday.

In his response, he did not retract his concerns, instead emphasizing the importance of integrity and honesty in recruitment.

This information was concealed from the LinkedIn profile of a senior at IIT Kharagpur, who was also a CEO-founder of a similar company. Daryani's company hired him, but he abruptly quit after downloading confidential data, updating his LinkedIn profile to claim he was a co-founder.

In his original social media post, Angad Daryani recounted a series of unsettling incidents.

Despite listing hands-on lab skills in chemical engineering on his resume, a PhD candidate at IIT Guwahati allegedly lacked them.

Another incident involving an IIT Bombay graduate was further explained by Daryani. The individual joined Daryani's company remotely, trained for 45 days, and then secured a job at a competitor, despite receiving a 75 percent pay raise.

Throughout the hiring process, Daryani's intent remains clear - to promote integrity and accountability.

In a tough job market with insufficient quality guidance for students, Daryani said he was willing to share details with colleges.

As India's job market grows, Daryani remains optimistic, stating that "honest, competent, hardworking people" will have plenty of opportunities. Although the incident raises concerns, it also emphasizes the importance of better guidance and mentoring for aspiring professionals.
