Ian Bishop Compares 14-Year-Old Vaibhav Suryavanshi to Young Sachin Tendulkar After IPL Heroics

Ian Bishop: The West Indies sensation Ian Bishop was absolutely wowed by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi breaking the record for Rajasthan Royals. Bishop compared this to a moment in his life when the 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar shocked him in a match in England. Vaibhav is now the youngest ever T20 centurion in history and lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium with a 35-ball 100 against the Gujarat Titans to become the fastest Indian to get there in IPL history.

Bishop continued his one-off comment on ESPNcricinfo by describing what he remembered of the tour match in July 1990, when a teenage Sachin Tendulkar shocked him when he played for India against Derbyshire. “We were in the game. And then came this little guy… I bounced him, and he hit me into a tree over deep mid-wicket. That’s the farthest I’ve ever been hit in my life,” Bishop said. Tendulkar’s unbeaten 105 helped India clinch a two-wicket win that day — a performance Bishop admits he’ll never forget.

Fast forward to 2025, and a 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi displayed similar dominance against world-class bowling. He hammered Ishant Sharma for 26 runs in an over, went after Washington Sundar, and hit Karim Janat for 24 runs to get into the 90s. Then he took down Rashid Khan for a century--101 of just 38 balls! ‘He’s even younger than Sachin was’: Bishop

Bishop drew a striking parallel: “This kid is just 14, even younger than Sachin was when I faced him. He’s doing this to bowlers like Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Rashid Khan… They must’ve felt what I did 35 years ago.”

With eight fours and 11 sixes, Vaibhav guided Rajasthan in chasing down a target of 210 in only 15.5 overs, carving one of the most memorable wins in IPL history.
