House Democrats Introduce Bill to Rename Miami Federal Prison After Trump: Latest Updates

House Democrats Introduce Bill to Rename Miami Federal Prison After Trump: Several House Democrats are proposing legislation to rename a federal prison in Miami after former President Donald Trump, following legislation introduced by House Republicans to rename an airport outside of Washington, D.C.

The Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida will be renamed by Congressmen Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), and John Garamendi (D-Calif.).

A bill renaming the Miami Federal Correctional Institution to "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution" was officially filed on Wednesday, April 3.

“Donald J. Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to be criminally indicted, with 88 offenses in four criminal cases to date. MAGA Republicans have proven themselves unwilling to solve real problems that face our country,” Garamendi said in a press release.

A bill to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after the former president was introduced by House Republicans just days ago. Republicans are trying to honor the presumptive nominee, while Democrats are working to undermine him during an election year.

"Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings. But he's never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president." Moskowitz joked in a statement released Friday "Help us make that dream a reality."

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.), who sponsored the bill to rename the airport, said “there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil.”

On Friday, Connolly said it was only fair that the nearest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago be named after him. The prison has just over 1,000 inmates and is located about 90 miles south of Mar-a-Lago.

"I hope our Republican friends will join us in bestowing upon Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves," Connolly added.

Republicans' plan to rename Dulles after Trump is unlikely to succeed in the Democratic-controlled Senate, just as the Democrats' bill is unlikely to become law.

There are 88 criminal charges against the former president across four indictments.

As a result of his departure from the White House in 2021, Trump faces charges in Florida alleging he mishandled classified records and attempted to obstruct the government's efforts to retrieve the records.
