Police told residents to stay in their homes as security forces were searching for the attackers, a security source said.

The area is a hotbed for protests against Israel.

The kingdom has seen some of the biggest protests in the region as anti-Israel sentiment is running high in Arab countries over the war in Gaza which was sparked by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

In March Jordanian riot police had to fire tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who marched on the embassy to protest the military operation.

Bilateral ties, established in 1994 but already unpopular in the Hashemite Kingdom, took a further blow in 2017 after an Israeli embassy guard shot and killed two Jordanians in Amman.

Two Jordanians were killed and the Israeli security guard Ziv Moyal was injured in the embassy compound during an altercation between them. The details of the incident were disputed between Israel and Jordan.
