Gujarat Floods: Death Toll Rises to 28, PM Modi Contacts CM as IMD Issues Red Alert for More Rain

Heavy rain started earlier this week in Gujrat at least 28 people are dead and the heavy rain and flood are snapping utility links forcing many people to leave for safety.9,000 people have been relocated to safe areas. India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for several parts of the state on Thursday. The water level is waist-high and there are partly submerged vehicles and roads.

The disaster was unexpected because those who were being affected were facing a rain deficit before the incident. According to government officials "pass through a wide stretch of the very flat terrain before reaching the sea. These flat lowlands of lower river basins are prone to flooding,".

Gujrat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi about the situation on Thursday. They discussed the situation and the measures that should be taken. The Home Minister said "that teams of the state and national disaster response forces have been deployed at various places in Gujarat."

18,000 people have been relocated and around 1,200 people have been rescued from the affected areas in the state. In special situations, choppers are used by the security forces to take people to safer locations, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.

Rajendra Trivedi, Gujarat's disaster management minister said "63 people have died since 1 June due to "rain-related incidents" such as drowning and walls collapsing."

Heavy to very heavy rains at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfalls in all the district of Saurashtra-Kutch namely Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Botad, Kutch and in Diu is expected.

Six contingents of the Army have been deployed to assist the 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 22 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for rescue and relief work in the state.

NDRF inspector Manjit said “In the last 2 days, there has been heavy rainfall in Dwarka...water has entered into the houses of people...our team rescued 95 people so far,”
