Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away at 80: A Look Back at His Legacy

Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away: As per the official reports, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which causes difficulties in breathing, he was diagnosed with COPD disease for many years.

Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away on Thursday.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away: On Thursday, Former West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passes away at his residence in Kolkata Palm Avenue around 8:20 am in the morning.

He was also an former veteran CPIM leader and was 80 years old.

As per the official reports, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which causes difficulties in breathing, he was diagnosed with this COPD disease for many years.

The Marxist leader, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the West Bengal Chief Minister from the year 2000 to 2011. He was made the state CM after the Jyoti Basu who was holding the position resigned because of bad health conditions.

In 2011, Bhattacharjee who was the Marxist party leader lost to the Trinamool Congress which marked the 34-year rule of the CPI(M) in West Bengal.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was married to Meera Bhattacharjee and they had one daughter named Suchetana Bhattacharjee.

Furthermore, as per the reports, Bhattacharjee's health became serious on Wednesday night, he had severe breathing problems. Doctors at Woodlands agreed that they would inspect him by Thursday at 11 a.m.

But his health again got worse on Thursday morning and after that, he passed away.

Several leaders across India grieved the lost of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee who was such an expectation leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on ‘X’, Saddened by the passing of Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, former CM of West Bengal. He was a political stalwart who served the state with commitment. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

West Bengal's current Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee said, “I am shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of the former Chief Minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. I have known him for the last several decades and visited him a few times when he was ill and effectively confined to home in the last few years.”

She further said, "My very sincere condolences to Meeradi and Suchetan at this hour of grief. I communicate my condolences to the members of the CPI(M) party and all his followers. We have already taken a decision that we shall give him full respect and ceremonial honour during his last journey and rites."

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on his ‘X’ handle, “A stalwart in public service, his extensive experience of over 5 decades as an MLA, Minister and later as Chief Minister has left an indelible mark. His simplicity, rich contributions to Bengali literature and commitment to community service were noteworthy.”
