First Session of 18th Lok Sabha Begins Today
First Session of 18th Lok Sabha Begins Today: As the first Session of the 18th Lok Sabha has already started from 11 a.m., the MPs from the Opposition INDIA bloc chose not to support Speaker B Mahtab give the oath of office to newly elected MPs.
As per the sources, the reason for such a decision could be that the Congress and the other opposition parties are not satisfied with the decision of President Droupadi Murmu to appoint seven-term member BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha instead of eight-time member Congress MP K Suresh.
The Congress further says that it is a rule in the Lok Sabha to appoint the MP with the most experience as the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

President Droupadi Murmu also appointed five senior leaders to assist the pro-tem Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha that includes, T R Baalu (DMK), K Suresh (Congress), Radha Mohan Singh, Sudip Bandyopadhyay (TMC) and Faggan Singh Kulaste (both BJP).
However, the Congress and the DMK leader have decided that will not help pro-tem speaker Mahtab give the oath of office to newly elected MPs as the first session begins today.
Earlier, on June 23 Parliament minster for House Affairs, Kiren Rijiju spoke with Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay after the decision came from the Congress and DMK to not support the Bhartruhari Mahtab in this Parliament Session.
But Sudip Bandyopadhyay who was among the panel of chairpersons also refused to support the pro-tem speaker.

On Sunday, a tweet shared by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X said, “Kodikunnil Suresh of the INC, who is in his 8th term, should have been Speaker Protem. But Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJP has been appointed on the flimsy grounds that he has greater claim because this is his 7th consecutive term.”
He further said, “If this argument is adopted, then why has Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi, a BJP MP who is also in his 7th consecutive term, not been considered? Is it because he is a Dalit like Suresh?”
It was planned earlier that all the MPs from the INDIA Bloc would arrive at the Parliament Session at 10.30 am for the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha.
As the first session begins today, PM Modi along with the council of ministers will take an oath, sign the roll of members, and take their places in the Parliament.
The President will speak to both houses of Parliament at the same time on June 27 and the Motion of Thanks on the President's addresses to the Parliament will be held on June 28. However, PM Modi is likely to answer the debate by July 2 or 3.
