The quake hit at 9:22 am Indian Standard Time (IST), with the epicenter at 26.51°N latitude and 93.15°E longitude at a depth of 25 km.
Preliminary data suggests no damage, but many people may have felt it as a light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Diphu (pop. 57,100) 30 km from the epicenter, and Dimapur (pop. 135,900) 42 km away, may have felt weak shaking.

In a post on X, the NCS wrote: "EQ of M: 4.1, On: 08/07/2025 09:22:19 IST, Lat: 26.51 N, Long: 93.15 E, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Karbi Anglong, Assam". On Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 had struck the Andaman Sea at a depth of 10 km, according to NCS.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where it may have been felt as very weak shaking are Bokajan (pop. 16,600) 43 km from the epicenter, Lumding Railway Colony (pop. 25,300) 44 km away, Hojai (pop. 36,900) 52 km away, Golaghat (pop. 34,400) 75 km away, and Tezpur (pop. 58,900) 81 km away.

The closest larger town where the quake may have been felt is Dimapur, a city with more than 140,000 people in India, 42 km (26 mi) southeast of the epicenter. People may have felt weak, shaking there. Several smaller towns and villages are located closer to the epicenter and may have felt stronger shaking.
